City Police Commissioner responds in weekly phone-in

Mangaluru, July 28, 2018: At the weekly phone-in programme on July 27, Friday City Police Commissioner T R Suresh said the drive will be conducted strictly at Clock Tower, Hampanakatta, Navabharath Circle and other places. Already, awareness is being created among the vehicles drivers.

Diesel-run vehicles are more polluting when compared to the vehicles which use petrol. Cases will be registered against vehicles found flouting the rules, he said.   The city police have decided to launch a drive to ensure that all heavy vehicles, including buses, have ‘Pollution Under Control’ certificates.

The police commissioner said that passengers will be allowed to board the bus in front of Clock Tower for one week on an experimental basis.

A caller said that the passengers should be allowed to board the buses from Lady Goschen Hospital to Light House Hill. Suresh said that passengers will not be allowed to board the bus at the signal.


A caller said that footpaths and parking lots have been encroached upon at Ambedkar Circle, Bejai Anegundi, Kankanady, Moodbidri, Urwa Store, Kottara, Mannagudde, Thokkottu, Ganjimutt and Central Market. The parking of the vehicles is causing inconvenience to the movement of pedestrians. The police commissioner directed the traffic police to take action in this regard.

City Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh also directed the traffic police to crack down on conductors who habitually are not issuing tickets to passengers.

During the weekly phone-in programme here, the callers said the problem is most acute on route No. 15 (Mangaladevi-Surathkal). Often conductors ridicule passengers who demand tickets, they said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M. Manjunath Shetty informed the Commissioner that the police booked seven cases against errant conductors of seven buses at Mangaladevi.

Commissioner  Suresh said buses of frequent offenders might be detained for sometime, as a punitive measure.

A caller from Bikarnakatte told the Commissioner about the danger posed by goods, especially construction material, protruding out of vehicles. There aren’t even flags to warn other motorists, he said.

He urged the police to ensure that all buses halt at the designated bay off Karavali Circle towards Pumpwell at Kankanady.

Now, they stop very close to the junction, affecting traffic as well endangering public life, he said.

Another caller said the time given for pedestrian crossing (20 seconds) at the PVS Circle was insufficient and urged the police to increase it. The circle witnesses heavy footfall and pedestrians find it difficult to cross roads at a time when many vehicle drivers jump signals too, he said.

At least 30 calls were received during the programme, with many police officials present. The phone-in programme is held every Friday from 10 am to 11 am. Callers can call on 0824 – 2220801 and 0824 – 2220830 and can directly express their grievances to the police commissioner.
