Coast Guard rescues 17 fishermen near Karwar

Mangaluru, Sept 20, 2018: In yet another heroic deed, Indian Coast Guard has rescued 17 fishermen who were stranded at sea today. The incident took place about 10 nautical miles off the coast of Karwar. All the recused persons were crew members of the fishing boat Yashwardhan. All are safe and fine.

Preliminary reports had indicated that there were 25 fishermen on board the distress vessel. It is now confirmed by Coast Guard that only 17 men were there.

Ghanshyam , a local fishermen informed the Coast Guard Station at Karwar regarding distress on the fishing boat Yashwardhan with 17 crew on board about 10 nautical miles from Karwar off  Loliem Pt (Polen) Karnataka and Goa border. It is understood that the boat had started taking in water and there was a risk that it might eventually sink.


On being informed of the matter, Indian Coast Guard Interceptor Boat C-155 based at Karwar on routine security patrol was immediately diverted to render assistance to the fishing boat which was in distress. At arrival on the spot, it was found that there was incessant flooding and the crew of the fishing boat requested for an immediate evacuation. Hence 12 crew members were taken onboard C-155. The Coast Guard men embarked the fishing boat to try and remedy the situation.

Coast Guard then arranged for another boat Amrutha for towing the boat to Karwar with back up from the Coast Guard vessel.
