ZP prepares Vision 2020 for district development

Mangalore, Oct 15, 2011:The Zilla Panchayat has prepared a 600-page document called Vision 2020 calling for an investment of Rs. 2,500 crore for the integrated development of DK. This document will be submitted to the chief minister on Oct 17 or Oct 18, said Shailaja Bhat, the president of the ZP.

Addressing reporters at a press conference held on Friday, she said that a delegation of ZP members, District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar, and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel will meet the CM.

The document lists out all the development projects that need to be taken up on priority within the next decade and those projects that are still waiting for the government nod.

Some of the proposed development projects include the Nadukalmakkar, Arasinamakki-Shibaje, Balpa-Buthigar, and Vittal-Salethoor projects. The documents calls for the earmarking of Rs. 28 crore for the development of 360 bridges and has proposed the construction of 15 hanging bridges to provide connectivity to villages in the district, said Sathyanarayana, the executive engineer of the ZP.

Further speaking about the document, Project Officer Abdul Naseer said that it mentions special projects essential for the district and proposes 46 multi village water schemes to solve drinking water problems. This scheme will cover 206 gramas and will cost around Rs. 56,431 lakhs.

Funds Released
Ms. Bhat said that the CM has also released Rs. 100 lakh to the ZP for development work, adding that the CM has promised to release another installment of Rs. 100 lakh. She also said that the government has released Rs. 100 lakh to each TP in the district.

Urgent Issues
Stating that the roads in the district are in a pathetic condition, Ms. Bhat said that the CM has promised to release Rs. 1314 lakh to fill all the potholes in the district. The CM has also promised to release a special package of Rs. 20 crore for the development of main roads and these funds will be distributed equally among all ZP constituencies.

Regarding housing, she said that 2,233 houses have been sanctioned under the Indira Awaz scheme and that 1,565 beneficiaries have been selected in the district. Besides, 14,000 houses have been sanctioned under the Basava Vasanthi Yojane and around 9,361 beneficiaries have been selected.

Farmers’ Problems
Since farmers in DK are unwilling to replace their arecanut trees affected with Yellow Leaf Disease, the ZP has written to the government to provide financial assistance so that farmers can grow palm trees or take up diary farming or grow paddy and rubber.  

Dissolution of Hirebandady GP
Ms. Bhat also said that the ZP will dissolve the Hirebandady GP and that the resolution to this effect has already been sent to the DC for publication in the gazette. Once the GP is dissolved, an administrator will be appointed to handle the affairs of the GP.
