Mangalore, Oct 13: The Citizens Action for Transparency in DK organized a district-level workshop titled “Strengthening Democracy through the Instrument of RTI” at Town Hall on Oct 13, Thursday. 


Justice H. R. Deshpande of the district session court inaugurated the event and said in his inaugural address that the Right to Information Act (RTI) 2005 aimed to make information freely available to the public. He also spoke of the importance of using RTI for good purposes and not to misuse it.

Later, students presented information regarding the achievements of 11 RTI activists. 


Mangalore Bar Association President S. P. Chengappa was the chief guest of the occasion. Listing out various scams beginning from the Jeep Scam of 1948 and the latest 2G Spectrum Scam, he said that the concept of Republic was in a sealed bottle till the RTI came into existence in 2005. 


Speaking of the importance of learning how to make proper use of the RTI, he urged young people to become RTI activists. 


General Convener of the Constitutional Movement Dr. Rita Noronha presided over the event.


Lolaksha, the working president of AHINDA, and Addoor Krishna Rao of Consumers’ Forum was the resource person.
