Yeddyurapapa is digging his own grave: Veerappa Moily

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Jul 26, 2011: “Yeddyurappa is digging his own grave” said M Veerappa Moily, Union Minister for Corporate Affairs,  referring to Lokayukta report on illegal mining involving Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.  It is a shame that the BJP government has resorted to phone tapping and leaking of the Lokayukta report, he said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said the government was trying to divert the attention and dilute the report by instigating the leakage even before Lokayukta, Justice Santosh Hegde submitted the report. He said that the only way for Yeddyurappa to save whatever is left of his reputation is to resign before the Lokayukta’s  report is published.

This is first visit of Mr. Moily to Mangalore after taking over as Union Minister for Corporate Affairs. He was felicitated by Ramanath Rai, District Congress President along with senior congress leaders at the Congress office in Mangalore. Veerappa Moily called upon congress party workers to go to people and expose BJP government’s involvement in illegal mining, corruption and nepotism.

Comprehensive Companies Act

Replying to a question on the new CSR Bill, he said, the Comprehensive Companies Act will make it mandatory for the corporate world to set aside 2 per cent of the profits for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in backward districts. The Bill is expected to be tabled in the monsoon session of Parliament. Moily said that there are 300 backward districts in the country which need to be supported and improve their living conditions.

He said that it should not be considered as some kind of charity but see it more as Corporate Social Responsibility of the corporate world. I feel 2 per cent is too less and would like to take to  higher level in the times to come. This will enable the country to enjoy the democratic dividend for the remaining 30 years. He also made it clear that if any company cannot be provided with two per cent of its profit, exemption can be given.

However, the Union government has plans to take up some specific programs for the improvement of these districts by involving corporate companies under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Already a few companies have come forward to show their commitment towards CSR and a meeting of all the companies will be convened to take a final decision on the issue, he said.

Lokpal Bill

On the Lokpal issue, Mr. Moily said the government is keen on introducing the Bill in the monsoon session. The plague of corruption had to be tackled through legal and constitutional means.

The Union government had plan to introduce the Lokpal bill in 2010 but got delayed due to various reasons. There are a few representatives in the civil society who want to go beyond the existing law but in the Indian democratic system, it is Parliament that is supreme and the Lokpal Bill has to be within the purview of the law and the Constitution.
