Mangalore, Sep 27: The Tourism Department and the Association of Travel Agents jointly celebrated World Tourism Day 2010 at Town Hall on September 27, Monday. DC V. Ponnuraj declared that DK is willing to promote tourist links between Lakshadweep and Mangalore.

Speaking about developing Mangalore as a tourist hotspot, he said that a meeting had been convened a couple of months back to discuss the same and that the establishment of a tourism centre in Mangalore had been proposed. Various events had been organized to make the beaches safe and clean and a number of people have expressed interest in culture, beach, medical, and educational tourism, he disclosed. Beach tourism will be successful only with the help of the Mogaveera community, he opined and urged all interested parties to unite and work for tourism development.

B. Nagaraj Shetty, the chairman of the coastal development authority, said that every house in Kodagu has a guest house and that Kerala is in competition with Mangalore, owing to which special packages must be introduced to facilitate cooperation with Kerala and Goa.

MLA Yogesh Bhat said in his presidential address that Mangalore is a beautiful city, which lacks adequate workforce. Projects such as Golf Court, Rope Way Bridge, and others will definitely help Mangalore develop as a tourist hotspot, he said. The MLA also spoke of the potential of developing Tannirbhavi as a tourist place. Stating that DK can easily be developed for religious tourism, he said that these projects require massive funds of Rs. 4,500 – 5,000 crore.

Rasheed Bolar, the coordinator of Lakshadweep Tourism Association, said that cruise tourism will commence from Mangalore to Lakshadweep, eliminating the need to board at Cochin. The Mangalore – Lakshadweep cruise will last 12 hours and will take only 2 days. A total of 21 such trips can be held annually, and only 3 ships need to come back to Mangalore again, he explained.

The programme was compered by Yathish Baikampady. Mayor Rajani Dugganna and President of Mangalore Association of Travel Agents Roshan Pinto were the dignitaries on the dais.
