World Konkani Centre distributes scholarships worth Rs. 1 crore

Mangalore, August 26, 2011: The World Konkani Centre gave away scholarships worth Rs. 1 crore among medical and engineering students from its Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund at TV Raman Pai Convention Hall on Aug 26 Friday.

T. V. Mohandas Pai, the chairman of Manipal Universal Learning, said that students should grab every opportunity they can find. He stated that only 13 percent of Indian youth are pursuing their higher studies, while a large number of students remain unproductive. He further said that lack of medical care in India has resulted in the death of innumerable children, adding that only by transforming the education sector, poverty can be eradicated.

The guest of honor was Grace Pinto, the MD of Ryan International Group of Institutions. M. Jagannath Shenoy, the MD of Ganesh Beedi Works, also addressed the students on the occasion.

Speaking about the Konkani scholarship fund, he said that the fund was established in collaboration with Corporation Bank and that eligible candidates can apply for the scholarship by visiting the bank’s website, irrespective of their location within India.

Scholarships worth Rs. 1 crore were distributed among medical and engineering students. While medical students received Rs. 40,000 each, engineering students received Rs. 30,000 each. Gurudatt Bantwalkar was also felicitated for his contributions to Konkani language on this occasion. Basti Vaman Shenoy, the president of World Konkani Centre, presided over the event.

Ramdas Kamath U., the chairman of VKSSF, later addressed reporters at a press conference and said that the Vishwa Konkani Kendra is distributing scholarships for the second year in succession. He also said that the organization plans to give scholarships to Siddi and other Konkani-speaking communities in future.
