World Handicaps Day observed at Town Hall

Mangalore, December 3: The Dakshina Kannada District Administration, Handicapped and Senior Citizens Welfare Department, Dakshina Kannada District Handicaps Federation (DKDHF), and Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayath Women and Children Welfare Department jointly observed the World Handicaps Day - 2009 at Town Hall, Mangalore. 

 

Santhosh Kumar Bhandary, the president of Zilla Panchayat, DK, inaugurated the function. In his inaugural speech, he said that most people are lucky to be healthy and fit; but some are handicapped and require the help of others. In spite of their handicap, these differently abled people are capable of earning their livelihood and giving service to society. Even the government is helping the differently abled and encouraging them. The Zilla Panchayat has sanctioned a sum of Rs 10 lakhs for the differently abled as per the government plans. Next year, this sum will be raised according to certain requirements, he said. 

U T Khader, the MLA of Mangalore, was the chief guest. He said that the government is guilty of neglecting the differently abled people in many ways. Even if they do not have any income, they cannot enjoy the ration card facility because it is based on family income. Besides, society, associations, and public sectors are also not friendly toward the differently abled. 

 

 

Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, the president of Dakshina Kannada District Sahitya Parishad, delivered the key-note address. 

Shakunthalala, the assistant director of the DK Zilla Panchayath Children and Women Welfare Department, made the welcome speech. 

Lion J K Rao, Lion Jagadeesh, Rt. Ananda Shetty, Vice President of DKDHH Madava Ullal, Ajith Kumar Rai Maladi, Principal of SDM College of Management Dr. K Devraj, R Ramesh, President of DKDHF Dinesh Shetty, and former president of DKDHF Subbayya Shetty were the dignitaries on the dais.
