Workshop on Compulsory Education Act held in city

Mangalore, Oct 18, 2011: Padi – Vellored, Mangalore and Child Right Trust of Bangalore jointly organized an inter-district workshop on Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 at ISD Hall in Nanthoor today.

Health and Education Standing Committee (ZP) President Eshwar Kateel inaugurated the workshop. Asha Nayak, the chairperson of Child Welfare Committee (CWC), was the chief guest.

Speaking about injustice toward children, Ms. Nayak said that the CWC has no support and coordination from other departments to provide compulsory education. She also spoke of the need to create public awareness through camps and workshops since children below 14 years of age are not compulsorily educated and many of them are employed as domestic servants.

Further, she said that schools hardly inform the CWC regarding children who drop out of schools for various reasons.

SMDC Secretary S. M. Abubakker presided over the event. Renny D’Souza delivered the introductory address and Sumana delivered the welcome address and proposed the vote of thanks.
