Woman sets daughter on fire, kills self at Sangabettu

Bantwal, July 12, 2011:In a heart rendering incident, a mother and her one and half years old daughter committed suicide by setting ablaze at Gadipalke near Sangabettu in Bantwal taluk on Tuesday.

 

According to police, the deceased are Mamatha (23), wife of Jayanth Shettigar and her one and half years old kid Khushi.

The incident occurred around 10.30 am when Mamatha along with the child locked the room and set her daughter on fire and later poured kerosene on herself and set ablaze.  When Mamatha’s father-in-law Nonaiah Shettigar heard the cry of the child, he ran inside the house and saw fire in the room.  Though he tried to douse the fire by breaking open the door, it was in vain.

After opening the door, Nonaiah found charred body of his daughter-in-law while the child was still breathing. Though the child was rushed to the hospital, it could not be survived. It was said that her husband was running an ice cream parlour in Bangalore with his brothers.  Her mother-in-law Padmavathi had been to a beedi branch when the incident occurred.  Jayanth was running an autorickshaw for the last few years. However, after his auto met with an accident, he left for Mumbai for work.  He had returned to his native two months ago and had left to Bangalore to start ice cream parlour along with his brothers.

Harassment Mamatha’s sister Kushalakshi alleged that Mamatha was harassed mentally by her mother-in-law Padmavathi. She was not given food properly and was insulted for not knowing how to roll beedies.

In-charge Tahsildar B P Vijay, Bantwal Rural Police Inspector Mohammed Rafiq visited the spot.  It was said that Mamatha’s parents had paid a dowry of Rs 30,000 during marriage.

A case has been registered.
