The reports regarding Ms. Periera are contradictory in nature. She was observed wandering around Jyothi Circle and was later seen climbing the telephone tower, after which the local people called the fire service department. Dr. Aun Rao, a psychiatrist at Wenlock Hospital, who was taking his morning walk at that time, saw the crowd gathered around the telephone tower and tried to convince her to come down.

A senior fire service officer, who was present on site, informed reporters that the woman attempted to commit suicide because she was upset about the way she was treated at the Bajpe Police Station when she went to lodge a complaint regarding missing jewelry. H. S. Varadarajan, the chief fire service officer, said that she had some grievances, which were being ignored despite being brought to the attention of concerned authorities. He said that she “looks like a woman who has lost her mental balance” and that she keeps making contradictory statements. Her complaints range from being beaten up by people to being robbed of her jewelry, he revealed.

Speaking about the rescue operation, he said that the fire service men rushed to the spot as soon as they were notified. They tried to convince her to climb down the pole, which she refused to do initially. She even tried to place demands before the fire service men. When she demanded to see the commissioner immediately, Mr. Varadarajan removed his badge and pretended to be the commissioner. The fire service personnel also assured the woman that she would not be harmed and that all her demands will be met.

Other sources reveal that she was staying at a lodge where she was assaulted by the staff. She is also said to have attempted to meet Mr. Seemanth Kumar Singh, the commissioner of Mangalore.

Additional City Police Commissioner Ramesh said that the motive for the attempted suicide is not yet known and the lady’s grievances can be understood only after conducting a preliminary inquiry.

Dr. Arun Kumar has confirmed that Ms. Periera is mentally imbalanced. Currently, she is being treated at Wenlock Hospital and police will investigate the case after getting the doctors’ approval.
