Mangalore, July 31: As heavy rains continued to lash the coastal districts, normal life was thrown out of gear in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Friday, July 30.

 

 

 

 

The heavy rains caused a landslide, which blocked traffic for a long time on July 31, Saturday.  This landslide, which took place close to Padil Railway Station, created a lot of inconvenience to pedestrians as well as motorists.

The national highway in this area has been damaged to such an extent that motorists can hardly drive on it. Even pedestrians find it difficult to walk by its sides.

A JCB was brought to the spot to clear the debris while vehicles remained standing in queues for nearly two hours. Some of the traffic was diverted at Pumpwell while other vehicles took the Thokkottu – Mudipu route.

Two women have been washed away in two separate incidents in Mangalore taluk on Thursday evening. A woman, identified as Seetha (65) was washed away in the flood at Madur on the outskirts of Mangalore on Thursday night. It was said that she had been to work in the paddy field and did not return. It is suspected that she might have been washed away in the flood. In another incident, one Bidugu (55) was washed away in water at Shirthadi in Moodbidri. The body was retrieved on Friday.

The Nethravathi water almost touched the NH-48 near Adyar, Kannur, thus inundating several huts on the banks of river Nethravathi. Kallapu, Adamkudru, Kodialbail, Kodialgutthu, Bharatinagar were flooded on Friday morning. In Kallapu and Adamkudru, the residents have started using coracle for ferrying to the safer areas. Houses have been collapsed at nine places in Mangalore taluk.

 

 

 

 

 

This include two houses in Talapady and Amblamogaru, one houses at Padukodi, Kemralu, Harekala, Manjanady and Shaktinagara. With the help of boat, residents of Ulaibettu and Koikude were shifted to the safer areas. In Kannur and Adamkudru, the locals are moving to safer places with the help of coracles. Water has entered more than 100 houses and shops in Mangalore City Corporation limits.

The Kumaradhara bridge was inundated, thus disruprting the movement of vehicles to Subrahmanya. Even Kumaradhara river in Uppinagady is overflowing while the Hosmta bridge near Kadaba has submerged, affecting vehicular movement in the area. Kannur-Mangalore-Yashwanthpura train has been cacelled on Friday as hillock caved in at Yedakumeri.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The house of Lathif was damaged when a hillock caved in at Adu in Amblamogaru. In fact, he had constructed the house after borrowing loan through SHG. The loss is estimated to be Rs 2 lakh. The wall of the house of one Saraswathi Shetty collapsed at Padyarmane. Water had entered the school at Government Urdu Primary School at Kallapupatna. The house of one Puttanna Gowda was damaged when a tree fell on it near Panja.  In the last 24 hours, Mangalore taluk recorded 202.8 mm rainfall followed by Belthangady—170.2 mm, Puttur—160 mm, Bantwal—146.6 mm and Sullia—105.4 mm.

The water-level in river Netravati has already crossed 7.8 mts in Bantwal and much closer to the danger level of 8.5 mts. The water level of Nethravathi in Uppinangady was 24.8 mts on Friday morning.

In Udupi

Heavy rains continued to lash the district as the district incurred heavy loss in the last 24 hours. Several houses have been inundated and damaged in Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala.  As many as 65 families were rehabiltated at Government Junior College at Udyavara in Udupi taluk as the area remained submerged since Thursday. Gruel center has been set up in the college. In Kote village of Kaup, as many as 35 members were shifted to nearby Kote Gram Panchayat after 25 houses were inundated.

Gruel centre has been opened at Kavadi village in Kota. In Suda village of Karkala taluk, about 6 families have been shifted to nearby safer place fearing flood as the river Papanashini is flowing in brim.  A tree fell on vented dam at Kemthuru bridge. As a precautionary measure, the families in the area have been shifted to nearby safe places.

Fire services are kept on alert. Speaking to Deccan Herald, District Fire Officer said as many as 93 persons and 17 cattle were rescued in Udupi taluk. Water had entered Bannanje, Badagabettu, Nittur, Kalsanaka, Kunjalugiri, Katpadi, Korangrapadi, Bailur and Pangala. Cattle shed belonging to Raghavendra Acharya collapsed, thus incurring a loss of Rs 30,000.

A house belonging to Jalaja Shedthi was partially damaged in Varamballi village of Brahmavara. The loss has been estimated at Rs 25,000. A house of Krishna Poojary in Nilavara village was partially damaged. Compound wall of K V Vasu in Kanyaru village of Mudabettu collapsed. In Haradi village of Brahmavara, a house of Vasu Poojary was partially damaged.

A house in Kundapur taluk belonging to Girija Gopal collapsed. A coconut tree fell on the house of Sarvottham Shetty in Kollur.  Udupi district received an average of 186.38 mm rainfall on Friday. In the last 24 hours, Karkala taluk received maximum of 208.07, Udupi taluk— 203.02 mm, Kundapur—148.06 mm.

Holiday for schools

All the schools in Dakshina Kannada district will remain close on Saturday in view of the incessant rains lashing the district. Speaking to Deccan Herald, DDPI Chame Gowda said schools will remain closed in Dakshina Kannada on Saturday. However, Nali Kali teachers will have to attend the convention. The samanya adhyayana maulyankika exam will be held as scheduled. However, no holiday has been declared to the schools in Udupi district.
