Mangaluru, May 22, 2019: Mangaluru Deputy Commissioner, Sasikanth Senthil, Airport officer a survivor of the crash and eminent citizens paid tributes to the victims of the 2010 Mangaluru air crash at the memorial and park built for them on near New Mangalore Port in Panambur on Wednesday, May 22.
DC. Senthil laid a wreath at the memorial in the park. One-minute silence was observed along with others praying for the unfortunate victims of the crash. Other dignitaries laid wreaths and showered flower petals on the memorial. Members of uniformed services saluted the memorial.
Others who paid floral tribute are Dr R Selvamani, CEO, zilla panchayat, Hezel Conseco, PA to airport director, Dr Murali Manohar, president, IMA, Mangaluru Chapter and officials of Air India. The memorial adjoins a park on the banks of the Phalguni at Thannirbavi, Kulur.
It may be remembere here that 158 people had been killed when flight IX 812 from Dubai crashed while landing at Mangaluru International Airport on May 22, 2010. 8 passengers survived the tragedy miraculously. 136 bodies were identified and handed over to their next of kin, the remaining 12 bodies that could not be identified. The park houses the remains of 12 victims who remained unidentified.
The Airports Authority of India in association with New Mangalore Port has since constructed the new memorial.
