Veena Rao enters Limca Book of Records 2010

May 18: Veena Rao, the editor and publisher of NRI Pulse, a Georgia-based newspaper, has been entered into the 2010 edition of the Limca Book of Records as the first NRI woman to edit and publish a newspaper outside India. Ms Rao hails from Mangalore. 

NRI Pulse, which can be accessed at www.NRIPulse.com, is a free monthly newsletter that provides the latest news to Indian-American and other South Asian communities in Georgia and other parts of the US. The newspaper was launched in 2006. Today NRI Pulse is the major source of news for Indian-Americans and has had a major impact on the community. The four-year-old paper is now a household name in Georgia. 

Ms Rao says that she launched the paper because she felt that it was important for people to know what is happening back home in India as well as in the country they live in, which is important for the socio-economic and cultural growth of the community. 

Ms Rao admits that running a newspaper is tough, especially during the recession. However, the Limca recognition has greatly motivated her to take her paper to the next level. 

Veena Rao has worked for the Indian Express in India as well as a couple of community publications in Atlanta. She has a Masters Diploma in Journalism and Communication from Symbiosis International University at Pune and a Masters in Economics from Fergusson College. 

Ms. Rao spent her childhood in Mangalore and studied in St. Gerosa and St. Mary’s Schools. Her mother Suguna Rao and members of her family live in Mangalore.
