Mangalore, Jan 2: The Karavali Lekhahiyara Vachakiyara Sangha arranged a programme to felicitate Vaidehi, the renowned Kannada writer who was recently chosen for the Kendra Sahitya Academy Award.

In her speech, she said that any work of literature worth its salt has a background of sensitivities. She said that the award she has won is in recognition of the sensitivities of women writers in particular and women in general. She said that she cannot take credit for the award because she has written about society and the people around her. She said that she doesn’t know “whether she wrote the works or whether the works were written by her.” She admitted that a lot of factors have led to the award.

Vaidehi revealed the fact that she was greatly influenced by prominent literary figures such as Lankesh, K V Subbanna, and Anupama Niranjan. She expressed concern about the rise in social and religious intolerance in coastal Karnataka and said that women should decide what exactly they should do in such a situation. She brought her listeners’ attention to the fact that boys and girls can no longer talk freely in public and that neighbors cannot coexist in religious harmony. She expressed regret that the awards they get have no power to control the unwanted developments in society.

Nemichandra, the noted Kannada writer, suggested that society should stick to its dreams of oneness in spite of living with people fostering the principle of divide and rule. Nemichandra who is also an aeronautical engineer said that she could attain her current position only because of parental support. She especially remembered her illiterate mother’s role in her development. She said that, although her mother did not have an opportunity to go to school, she knew how important education was, especially for women.
