Mangalore, Apr 3:  “University College has improved a lot recently; and the credit for this goes to M Veerappa Moily, the union minister for law and justice,” said Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, the vice chancellor of Mangalore University. He was speaking as the chief guest of the Alumni Day organized at University College by the University College Alumni Association on April 3, Saturday.

Saying that he had heard a lot about University College when he arrived at Mangalore upon his appointment as the vice chancellor of Mangalore University, he said he dreamed of making it a model university.


Former Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof K M Kaveriappa said that the University College has seen a number of developments; but the college infrastructure is still in need of development. He also suggested that the history of the university must be published in the form of a book because the only documents that exist at present are some handwritten pages. Such a document is required during NAAC visits, he explained.


Dr. P Dayananda Pai, the chairman of Century Buildings in Bangalore, was the guest of honor. He said that one meets success twice—once in the mind and once in reality. The students of University College have reached the heights of success in various fields, he claimed.


Mentioning that Mangalore is famous for its entrepreneurs and its hospitality, he said that the country is currently facing problems of illiteracy, malnutrition, and poverty, which must be solved if we are to attain success in any field. He said that teachers must not only give students knowledge about their subjects, but also wisdom.


Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy, Dr. P Dayanand Pai, and Prof K M Kaveriappa were later felicitated.


Treasurer Ramesh Kumar, Joint Secretaries N Shashidhara Shetty and Namitha D Rai; Principal of University College Dr. Lakshminarayana Bhatta were also present on the dais.


The President of the University College Alumni Association D K Chowta welcomed the gathering. Secretary of the Alumni Association Dr. K Sunder Naik read the annual report. Sudhakar Rao Pejawar compered the programme.

The formal stage programme was followed by a colorful cultural programme, which included Nage Habba by Richard Louis and his team and a clarinet musical event by Pandit Narasimhalu Vadavathi.
