Mangalore, Dec 4: Union Minister for Shipping G.K. Vasan, visited NMPT today, December 4.  P. Tamilvanan,  Chairman, NMPT along with Senior Officers of the Port received the Minister and took him around the Port and explained the ongoing developmental works in the Port. 


The Minister has shown interest in releasing the employees of the Vessel, Asia Forest which sunk off New Mangalore Port area in July,2009. All the 21 employees are all aunder remand in DK district. Most of them are Chinees Origin.


The Port visit was followed by a meeting with the Chairman, wherein the Minister reviewed the overall performance and the developmental projects of the Port.  While appreciating the performance of the Port and the ongoing developmental works, Minister advised the Port management to chalk out plans to make up the shortfall in the Iron Ore traffic during the current year.  The issue of restriction of Iron Ore Fines to New Mangalore Port was highlighted. The Minister advised the Port to take up the matter with the State Govt. to ensure revocation of restrictions imposed, so that the Iron Ore traffic flow to Mangalore Port will not be drastically affected.

During the wharf inspection,  Chairman explained the various activities including the Construction of Coal Berth, Construction of Mechanized Iron Ore Handling Plant,  the proposed site of Container Terminal and POL Jetty.  Chairman also underlined the concretization of roads, which has taken place in the Port in the last couple of years.

Srinivas Kamath, President, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Steamer Agents Association, Stevedores Association, Clearing & Forwarding Agents Association, major Port users like MRPL, KIOCL, Oil Companies and Unions of the Port such as HMS, INTUC, AITUC,  SC/ST Welfare Association , Officers Association  met the Minister.
