Ullal residents scared of being washed away

Ullal residents scared of being washed away

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore June 16: The rough waves of the Arabian Sea are a constant source of terror for the hapless residents of Ullal. The unsolved problem of sea erosion is filling residents with helpless rage and frustration, especially because the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) and the district administration seem to be doing nothing about it.

On June 16, Wednesday, authorities placed about 11 loads of stone to block the waves along the coast of Ullal; but many residents feel that they should have been rehabilitated. They say that they keep hearing the sound of the waves lashing against the stones and cannot sleep for fear of being washed away.

Many of the residents have not even gone for work; and many say that they haven’t even cooked for days. They are wondering whether they should work or save their homes. The anganwadi and madarasa of Masjid Al Rifayya have been shut for nearly four days because the residents are too scared to send their children to school.

Although the Al Masjid Rifayya and Khilariyya Masjid are in danger of being eroded by the sea, prayers are regularly held there.
