Mangaluru: July 27, 2015: Two students of SDM College of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences have been appointed as physicians at the Ayush wellness centre inside the Schedule ’B’ area of the President’s Estate at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. The clinic was inaugurated by President of India Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday.
They are Dr Vikram Pai from Udupi and Dr Divya Saraswat from Uttar Pradesh. Dr Divya told sources that she was happy to be appointed as physician at the clinic. "It was done after two rounds of interviews last month - one by Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy and the other interview was at Rashtrapati Bhavan. I met the President, not personally. But I was there when he inaugurated the clinic," said Divya. "When my father decided that I should do this course, there were hardly any colleges and Ujire was one among the best that existed in the country. Hence I landed up at Ujire," she said.
While Divya is the ninth batch student who completed her course in 1997-98, Vikram was a 14th batch student. Vikram was a Yoga and Naturopathy consultant at Rajan babu Institute of Pulmonary medicine and Tuberculosis from the past five years.
Dr Vikram said, "when Central council invited applications I applied. There were eight physicians who had applied. Finally they selected us. It’s unbelievable. I least expected it."
Presently it will be a one year appointment. "Depending on the demand, the President will decide if it should continue or not. If The President requires our consultation, he will call us to the Bhavan," said Vikram, who interacted with the President during the inauguration of the clinic. "The President wanted to know what Yoga and Naturopathy was and I explained its importance," said Vikram.
Vikram’s tryst with Delhi was due to Dr. Ishwara N.Acharya, who is the Director, Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN). He is a second batch student from Ujire. "He is inspiration for me getting into Central services. I worked at CCRYN as a research assistant. After a year, I wanted to come to clinical side. As there was no option at Delhi, I worked at Dr AV Baliga Memorial Hospital, Udupi from December 2008 to October 2010," said Vikram. An opportunity to return to Delhi came in 2010 during the Common Wealth Games in 2010, when Acharya was assistant director at Moraji Desai National institute of Yoga, where he worked as a physician during CWG.
