Udupi: St Antony statue at Shirva Church desecrated by miscreants

Udupi, Dec 12,2016: In a shocking case, some unidentified miscreants have desecrated the statues at the Our Lady of Health Church at Shirva on December 11, Sunday. The Statue of St Antony was completely destroyed in the incident which reportedly took place on Sunday afternoon. Police have stepped up security in the region following the incident which has caused a lot of anguish.

On Sunday night, a few parishioners even staged a protest seeking a thorough investigation. Udupi unit Catholic Sabha President Valerian Fernandes has also strongly condemned the incident and has demanded arrest of the miscreants responsible for the act.

Sources said all five cameras at the church entrance were not functioning and that the act was committed at a time when there was none around.

There is hope that the CCTV cameras in the nearby English school might give some hints. The canine squad which was pressed into service moved towards the English medium school indicating that the miscreants might have fled from that way.

District Superintendent of Police K T Balakrishna, senior police officials, local MLA and former minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and others visited the place.
