Udupi , Nov 5, 2015 : Udupi DC Dr R. Vishal on Nov 4, directed officials of the Women and Child Welfare Department to submit proposals for the renovation of Santwana Kendras in Udupi and Karkala.
He was presiding over a meeting of 11 district-level coordination committees that are functioning under the purview of the Department of Women and Child Welfare, here.
He also called for new proposals to provide increased relief to women, who were victims of atrocities.
DC asked to form committees against sexual harassment in government and private institutions that did not have them.
He told them to submit a proposal for construction of a beggars’ shelter home in the district.
Gracy Gonsalves, Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare, said 170 cases of domestic violence had been reported in the district since 2008. As many as 49 women were given treatment under the Women’s Special Medical Treatment Project.
The Santwana Kendras were giving counseling and legal aid to women in distress. At least 103 cases had been registered under the Dowry Prohibition Act in the district in the last five years. Of them, 53 cases were still in the courts, 15 cases were being investigated and 22 disposed.
There has been no punishment in any of the cases. Steps were being taken to provide hostels for working women. It is said 104 cases were reported under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act in the district since 2012.
