Udupi, Sep 15, 2015:  According to a release,   Udupi district unit of the  BKS -  Bharatiya Kisan Sangha has decided to support the protests and National Highway Bandh at Uppinangday village in Dakshina Kannada district against the Yettinahole project, on September 15.

Yettinahole

At a meeting held Sept 14,  B.V. Poojary, president of the Udupi district unit of the sangha, said that though Udupi and Dakshina Kannada were now different districts, the problems and lifestyle of the people in both the districts were identical. Some forces were now trying to divert the Netravati. If this was allowed, the rivers from Udupi district too would be diverted in the future.

The elected representatives of both these districts had forgotten the basic fact that despite receiving heavy rainfall during the monsoon, the people in the villages of both these districts faced water shortage during summer. Yet, the elected representatives of both these districts had remained silent on the “unscientific” Yettinahole project.

The Yettinahole project was another mega project on the lines of the Varahi Irrigation Project in Udupi district. It took 35 years to complete just the first phase of the Varahi Irrigation project. “The Yettinahole project is aimed at filling the pockets of politicians through distribution of contract works. With the result, people have no other alternative but to fight against the project.
