In his inaugural address, Mr. Sharma urged the postal department officers to take care while entering data of individuals. The UID project has been launched particularly for security reasons, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, T. G. Nayak, the senior superintendent of Mangalore Postal Division, said that the service will be extended to Kankanady, Kulshekar, and Ullal in the second phase and to Hampankatta, Kodialbail, Bejai, and Kankanady in the third phase. He also said that it will be extended to Ashoknagar, Surathkal, Panambur, Haleyangady, Bajpe, Kinnigoli, Munkur, Carstreet, Katipalla, and Gunjimutt.

Explaining the purpose of UID, Mr. Nayak said that a random 10-digit alphanumeric identity number will be issued to every citizen of India. This number will be stored in a centralized database and linked to the biometric and demographic details of the citizen. The applications for the UID card are available at the post office.

The applicant will have to present address proof and identity proof in the form of PAN card, passport, driving license, ration card, voter ID, and so on. The documents will be checked, after which eyeball scanning and collection of fingerprints will be done. These details will then be matched against the details of existing UID holders through centralized services, after which the applicants UID card will be delivered at his address, free of cost.
