Mangaluru, 05 May 2015: The Principal District and Sessions Judge Uma M.G. on Monday May 04 sentenced Mohammed Rafiq and Mohammed Mustafa to five years rigorous imprisonment when proved guilty of robbing a woman of her gold chain and running their two-wheeler over her while trying to escape.

chain_snatchin.According to the charge-sheet by Mangaluru Rural police, Mohammed Rafiq (26) from Panaji and Mohammed Mustafa from Puttur had come to Neermarga on March 9, 2013, on a motorcycle that they had stolen from K.S. Rao Road the previous day.

Around 7.30 a.m. they saw 52-year-old Sundari walking along with her relative Priya. Rafiq decided to get down from the motorcycle and follow the two women while Mustafa went past to stand a little ahead. Rafiq snatched the gold chain from Sundari and ran to the motorcycle. Sundari raised an alarm seeing the two driving away.

Local residents tried to block their way. Seeing the motorcycle coming towards her, Sundari tried blocking the way too. She came under the wheels of the motorcycle when the two of them tried pushing her away. The residents then caught the two convicted persons, the police said.

Public Prosecutor Pushparaj Adhyantaya examined Sundari, Priya and other residents of Neermarga, who narrated the sequence of events on March 9 before the court. The Judge has convicted Mohammed Rafiq and Mohammed Mustafa under Section 394 (Robbery) of the Indian Penal Code.
