Mumbai, Sep 29, 2017: Two women from Dakshina Kannada district were killed in the stampede at Elphinstone railway station’s foot-over bridge in Mumbai that took place on Friday morning.The deseased are identified as Sujatha P Alva (42) and Sumalatha C Shetty (45).

The incident took place at around 10:30 am on the foot over-bridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban stations. Over 30 people have been injured in the incident. Medical teams have reached the spot. Those injured have been rushed to KEM hospital, Mumbai.
Commuters claim that the foot-over bridge at Elphinstone was narrow and is always crowded during the peak hours. In videos emerging from the incident, people can be seen trying to climb over the railings of the stairway to escape the stampede.
Elphinstone Road station is a busy hub for local train commuters as a large number of offices are located in the area. Crowd management at busy suburban stations like Parel and Elphinstone has been a longstanding demand. "It was a disaster waiting to happen," a resident said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh for the families of those who died. Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, who arrived in Mumbai, also announced Rs. 5 lakh as compensation for the families of those who died.
