Mangalore, July 6: Dakshina Kannada district witnessed heavy rainfall on Monday, which rapidly filled the rivers and streams. Yesterday, Bantwal witnessed the highest rainfall of 126.2mm followed by Mangalore (70.2mm), Puttur (39mm), Belthangady (37.2mm), and Sullia (14.2mm).

The water level of the River Nethravathi is 4m in Bantwal and 19m in Uppinangady while the water level of the Kumaradhara River is 19m.During the next two days, isolated areas in coastal Karnataka are expected to experience 125mm rainfall.


A boundary wall collapsed on a house at Sajipa Munnar in Bantwal; and the loss is estimated to be around Rs 7,000. The low-lying areas of Mangalore were flooded; and water entered the Venus Hospital of Suratkal because the storm water drains near the hospital are very narrow. Water entered at least 6 houses in Acharya Colony because of the lack of storm water  drains. Bellare in Suratkal also experienced artificial flooding because a careless builder had dumped clay near the storm water drains. Some of the houses in Janatha Colony have been damaged.


The boundary walls belonging to Susheela and Ramesh Devadiga have been damaged. Mayor Rajani Dugganna visited the flood-affected areas and instructed engineers to clear the drains at the earliest. Corporator Ganesh Hosabettu also played an important role in getting the storm water drains cleared.


Udupi witnessed heavy rainfall on Monday. The roof of a government school was damaged and losses are estimated to be around Rs. 1 lakh. Udupi experienced 60.93mm of rainfall during the previous day while Karkala and Kundapura witnessed 58.6mm and 28.4mm of rainfall, respectively. The roof of Saraswathi Government Higher Primary School at Moodanidamboor was also partially damaged. The house of Kamala Shedthi of Karkala was also partially damaged by the rains.
