Tulunada Birse Award conferred on Devadas Kapikad

Mangalore, May 30, 2012 : Devadas Kapikad received the Tulunada Birse Award at a Chavadi Koota organized by the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy on May 29, Tuesday. On the same occasion, Thimmappa Gujaran, the renowned Yakshagana artiste, received the Chavadi Thammana Award.

 

 

 

 

 

In his acceptance address, Mr. Kapikad said that aristes can never be considered perfect because they are continuously learning new things.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Gujaran said that Tulu speakers must cherish their culture because Yakshagana educated them and imparted human values to them in those days when they were uneducated.

A discussion on the topic “Development for Tulu Yakshagana” was held after the award ceremony.

Kumble Sunder Rao, former president of the Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy, said that parents have stopped taking their kids to watch Yakshagana shows because of the influence of TV, film, Internet, and other media. Speaking about the significance of Yakshagana, he said that it is an art form that can familiarize children with various life values.

Jabbar Samo, the only Muslim Talamaddale interpreter, said that efforts must be made to revive the art of Yakshagana.

Nithyananda Karanth Polali, Yakshagana litterateur, said that Yakshagana is a great art that helps understand the depths of one’s being. Lamenting that majority of the people no longer have the time for it, he said that government subsidies for the art and Yakshagana TV shows are essential these days.

Several prominent Yakshagana artistes such as Kolyur Ramachandra Rao, Siddakatte Vishwanath Shetty, Tharanath Balyaya, and Aruva Koragappa Shetty were present. Umanath Kotian, president of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, presided.

Dr. Kamala Bhat released Dr. Laxmi G. Prasad’s two research books titled Tulunadina Apoorva Bhoothagalu and Belakinedege on this occasion.
