Mangalore, July 19: Commissioner of Police Seemanth Kumar Singh said that the traffic police will be trained to identify cases of drunken driving. He was speaking to reporters during a press conference held in his office on Monday, July 19.

The commissioner also spoke about the importance of creating mass awareness regarding the menace of drunken driving as it is impossible to force anybody to stop drinking. He informed reporters that DK has already received 10 drunken-driving detectors and many more will be brought soon.


He also said that fines will be imposed on those who talk on their mobile phones while driving. Motorcycle riders will be prohibited from wearing stylish helmets that resemble caps and wearing proper helmets will be made mandatory, he said. Number plates on vehicles should be in normal fonts and buses will have to stop only where they are supposed to stop, he added.


He said that the traffic police will henceforth seize the vehicles of those caught driving in a drunken state and a fine will be imposed on the driver, adding that the vehicle will be released only after the fines are paid. 


The department will also meet regularly to create mass awareness among people. The DCP has no far provided training to colleges and will be targeting schools soon.
