Udupi, Mar 03 2018: Udupi SP  Laxman Nimbargi said on March 2, Friday that the findings of the study on accident spots at 15 junctions on National Highway 66 in Udupi district, were discussed with the National Highways Authority of India, and it was their responsibility take measures to avoid accidents.

Udupi-SP-Laxma.The ‘Road Inventory Study to Identify and Prioritize Accident Block Spots’ was prepared by the Department of Civil Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology.

Speaking to reporters during the weekly phone-in programme held at the District Police Office here, Mr. Nimbargi said the study was carried out from Thekatte Junction to Padubidri Junction.

Some of the suggestions in the report were taking safety measures where the service roads touched the NH 66, and formation of traffic islands for traffic diversion. “The report has been discussed with the NHAI. It is their responsibility to bring changes in these junctions to avoid accidents and improve traffic management,” he said.

The 15 junctions studied were: Thekkatte Junction, Guru Narashima Temple Junction, Saligrama-Gundmi Junction, Brahmavar Akashavani Junction, Mahesha Hospital Cross, Santhekatte Junction, Ashirvad Junction, Baliga Fishnet Cross, Karavali Junction, Ambalpadi Junction, Udyavara Junction, Katpady Junction, Innanje Junction, Kaup Junction and Padubidri Junction.

He said the police had taken measures to prevent the movement of heavy vehicles on narrow roads to dodge the toll plaza at Sasthan on NH 66. This task will become easier as the district police is expected to get 10 Multi-Function Devices by March 10. Each of these devices can track and register up to 100 cases per day.

A training programme for the police personnel to use these devices is scheduled for March 6.
