Mangaluru Jan 21, 2018: The commuters, who travelled on Charmadi Ghat (NH 234) on Jan 20, Saturday, had a harrowing experience as they were caught in a traffic jam, following the sudden increase in the density of vehicle, with the closure of Shiradi Ghat Road.
Density of vehicles was moderate in the morning, it increased by afternoon, resulting in traffic congestion on 11th curve at Annappaswamy Temple. According to eye witnesses, the vehicle users were clearing the congestion and were moving forward.
A KSRTC bus driver, said, “The density of vehicles increased by evening. As heavy vehicles ply on the stretch, many a time, they have to reverse at the curve to facilitate the movement of vehicles coming from the opposite direction, which is also creating the traffic congestion.” The closure of Shiradi Ghat has increased the pressure on Charmadi Ghat.
Road Commences : Meanwhile, the authorities have placed a gate at Gundya Junction to prevent the movement of vehicles further to facilitate the work on the second phase of Shiradi Ghat stretch.
Barring a few vehicles from Sakleshpur that had developed technical snag in the middle of Shiradi Ghat and night buses to Mangaluru from Bengaluru, no vehicles travelled on the stretch in the morning.
By 11 am, the movement of all the vehicles was stopped on the stretch. The authorities have deployed two Home Guards near the gate to divert the vehicles to other routes.
