Mangalore April 14: The management of Shri Guru Vaidhyanatheshwara Kordabbu Daiwasthana has objected to the construction of the International Sports Complex at Bangra Kuloor. Refusing to part with the Daiwasthana land, Ranganath Salian, the priest of the Daiwasthana, said that the Daiwasthana has been around for several years and is a prominent spiritual centre for the people living between Kottara Chowki and Panjimogaru, adding that the place attracts more than one lakh devotees during the Nemotsava.

The International Cricket Stadium project, which was inaugurated by Home Minister V S Acharya on April 14, Wednesday, requires 16 acres of land. Authorities have already begun the process of acquiring more land for the project. Mr. Salian said that nearly 60 houses surround the Daiwasthana, adding that the 8 – 10 acres of land that the government plans to acquire is fertile land, which is used extensively to graze cattle.

The local people as well as the Daiwasthana authorities feel that shifting the Daiwasthana is out of the question although the home minister expressed his opinion that it could be easily shifted, before quickly adding that the government is aware of the importance of daiwas in Tulunad.

In his inaugural speech, Acharya labeled the project as a “milestone.” He said that everybody must cooperate with the establishment of a good international sports complex. Since Mangalore is the centre of activities, the need for an international stadium is great, he said. Assuring that the government is willing to support the project, he said that the local people must be involved in this project. He also suggested convening a meeting with the KSCA in Bangalore to discuss the issue.

District-in-charge Minister Krishna J Palemar said that the day was a joyous one for all Mangaloreans, adding that this will be the first international sports complex in Karnataka. Palemar also said that people should avoid raising objections to developmental projects such as MSEZ. He proclaimed that the BJP still has 3 years left in which to develop the state.

Speaking about the positive response to KSRTC’s Volvo buses, he lauded Mangaloreans for their cooperative nature. He congratulated the DC, saying that he works 24 hours for the welfare of the people of Mangalore despite the fact that he does not belong to Mangalore.

Vice President of DKCA Dr. Devdas Rai said that a Sports Club will be established in the 4.5 acres of land already available. The Club will have an office, a tennis court, and a cricket ground. Interested people will have to pay a membership fee in order to join the club. Cricket buffs in Mangalore and its surrounding regions are full of enthusiasm about the project, he said.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA Yogish Bhat, MLA Abhayachandra Jian, Dr Shantaram Shetty, Nagaraj Shetty, Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj, and Dr Srikant Rai were also present on the occasion.
