Mangalore, Sep 2, 2012: Sebastian Jumail, mayor of Dieppe in France, has officially invited “Team Mangalore,” a Mangalore-based group of kite fliers, to represent India at the 17th International Kite Festival at Dieppe.

Team Mangalore will be the only Indian team to represent India in this International Kite Festival, which is scheduled to be held in Dieppe from September 8 to September 17, 2012. Teams from 42 countries all over the world will take part in this event.

A five-member team comprising Dinesh Holla, Sarvesh Rao, Shashank Shetty, and Pran Hegde will take part in this event. Dinesh Holla, who is also an artist, will exhibit more than 35 works of art related to kite flying during this festival.

The 17th International Kite Festival in Dieppe will be based on the theme “five elements.” Accordingly, Team Mangalore will showcase its latest creation Pachan Bhootha, a 5ft by 4ft hexagonal kite made of rip stop nylon fabric.

Besides, the team has also created a brand new kite called “Pakshiraja Garuda,” an appliqué-work kite 18ft wide and 9ft high. The team will also showcase popular kites such as Yakshagana, Gajaraja, Kathakalli, Avatar Bird, Charlie Chaplin, Pushpaka Vimana, Bharatanatyam, and others, illustrating India’s rich cultural diversity.

Team Mangalore is the winner of the Best International Kite Award, having showcased their kites at international kite festivals in England, France, and Canada. The team’s Kathakkali kite has been entered into the Limca Book of Records as the largest kite in India. In April 2012, the team took part in international kite festivals in South Korea and Italy.

The Dieppe kite festival is said to be among the 300 not to be missed events of the world.
