Taslima should not be granted asylum in India: Poojary

m.today

Mangalore, Mar 2: “The government of India should not provide shelter to Taslima Nasreen, the controversial writer, whose writings have hurt Indian sentiments,” said former union minister B Janardhan Poojary on March 2, Tuesday, during a press conference.

oojary further said that the violent reaction of the people of  Shimoga and Hassan to Taslima Nasreen’s article shows that their sentiments have been deeply hurt. Permitting the writer to live in India will have an adverse effect on the communal peace of the country because a majority of Indians cannot accept her views on religious matters. For these reasons, the union government should withdraw the asylum provided to the writer.

When a journalist questioned him about the differences between Shiva Sena and him, the minister replied that there were many differences between the two. He said that, unlike the Shiva Sena, which protests against Shah Rukh Khan and Sachin Tendulkar, he places emphasis on peace. He added that he would have conferred the Bharat Ratna on Sachin Tendulkar.

Continuing his tirade against Taslima Nasreen, the minister said that, although the writer can use her freedom of expression, she cannot give judgment on religious matters, adding that the writer should be aware that everybody has the freedom to religion and hurting another person’s religious sentiments is disrespectful to law.

The violence that followed after the publication of Taslima Nasreen’s translated Kannada article in a newspaper is a shame on the state government, alleged the former union minister, adding that the government is incapable of maintaining law and order in the state. Moreover, it considers all serious issues as minor, he alleged. He further emphasized his point by saying that the home and the chief ministers are directly responsible for the violence in Hassan and Shimoga.

He further alleged that the state government is powerless to take action against the mining lobby in Karnataka in spite of the Lokayukta report and the fact that the Supreme Court had ordered the stopping of illegal mining. He accused the chief minister of using the mining lobby to remain in power.

Poojary also stated that there is no security for minorities in Karnataka, adding that the people have already lost faith in the state government.

Congress leaders Harikrishna Bantwal, Sanjeev Moily, and Suresh Ballal were also present.
