Mangalore, October 11: T. V. Mohandas Pai, the director and head of Finacle, admin and HR, Infosys Leadership Institute and Education and Research, laid the foundation stone for the T. Vimala Pai and T. V. Raman Pai Hostel block at the World Konkani Centre, Shaktinagar on Oct 10, Sunday. The hostel, which will be ready in a year, will facilitate research work on Konkani language and culture.

In his inaugural address, Pai spoke of the importance of helping underprivileged children get an education by giving scholarships, adding that no Konkani child should be deprived of education because he/she lacks money. He said that Konkani leaders should focus on providing education to financially underprivileged children. He also spoke of the importance of generating leaders for the future by training and mentoring youth.


Speaking about the importance of unity among all Konkani-speaking communities, he said that social networking sites such as Facebook might help in achieving them.


President of Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation Basti Vaman Shenoy said that the foundation is trying its best to develop Konkani language and culture. Besides working for the protection and preservation of Konkani culture, tradition, and language, the foundation is also focusing on educating the community members.


Chairman of Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation P. Dayananda Pai said that the foundation is organizing a wide range of programmes for the development of the Konkani-speaking communities.


Five students who opted to study Konkani in their schools were felicitated on the occasion with school bags and books. A book on Ravindra Kelekar, the Jnan Peeth award winner, was also released on the occasion. Kshamatha, an initiative on youth training, was also launched.


T. Vimala Pai, the donor of the hostel block; Ramadas Kamath, the president of the scholarship fund of the Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation; Pradeep Pai, president of the hostel block construction committee; and Raghunath Shet, the entrepreneur, were also present for the foundation stone laying ceremony.
