Mangalore, July 21: Terming the Bhagavad Gita Abhiyan as a conspiracy on the part of the state government to saffronize the education system, more than a 100 students staged a protest under the leadership of the Campus Front of India (CFI) in front of the DC’s office.

CFI District President Haidar Habeeb said in his protest speech that the introduction of a Hindu religious text in primary and high school text books is not only an insult to democracy, but also disturbs the communal harmony of the state. He also accused the state government of attempting to replace the Constitution with Manusmrithi by brainwashing school children.

State CFI secretary Imran Bajpe said that the state is ruled by the Hindutva nationalist Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and officials have admitted that policy promoted by the state’s education department which was prompted by Hindu priests who have been campaigning to teach the Hindu scripture among school children and the same is in the process of Execution, which will lead to rampant discrimination amongst students, society and breach of our Indian secular features.

The decision of the government is a part of conspiracy to saffronize the educational system of the state and it causes the sprout of communal sentiments in the minds of the students. Moreover, teaching a scripture of particular religion in educational institutions is fully unconstitutional. It may cause unrest if other religious people insist to teach their religious scriptures in schools.

Flaying Vishveshwara Heggade Kageri, the primary and higher education minister, who recently stated that those who oppose the Bhagavad Gita Abhiyan should get lost from India, Hameed said that the minister’s statements can easily disrupt communal harmony in the state.

Akbar Ali, district general secretary of SFI and others were present.
