Mangalore, Feb 10: The much awaited village games sports meet Sri Bhootanatheshwara Kreedotsava is all set to get on to a rand start with the formal inauguration of the mela on 12th February 2011 at 8:30 a.m. D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Member of the Parliament, Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, eminent elder Mijarguthu Anand Alva and Dr. Mohan Alva, Chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation are the dignitaries who will grace the function, announced Vijaynath Shetty, the chief co-ordinator of the event at a press conference held at Hotel Goldfinch in the city last night.

Sri Bhootanatheshwara Kreedotsava is being held under the auspices of Shasthavu Sri Bhootanatheshwara Temple and Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Bhajana Mandali, Badaga Yedapadavu, Mijar, Mangalore Taluk on 12th & 13th February 2011. The Kreedotasava is a festival of village games and is an attempt to revive traditional games and sports of Tulunadu region comprising Udupi - Dakshina Kannada – Kasargod regions, he said.

 

Over 1300 contestants will participate in 21 games of the two-day Kreedotsava. The Kreedotsava will conclude with a dance performance by the renowned actress and Bharata Natyam artiste Padmashri Shobana and her troupe on 13th February at 6:00 p.m. The entry to the dance programme is free and all are invited to attend and witness the show, Shetty added.

Sri Bhootanatheshwara Kreedotsava
Sri Bhootanatheshwara Kreedotsava has competitions in as many as 21 village games. Winners will be given shield or medals in addition to the attractive prize money.


The competitions cover all categories like solo and group, male, female, children and senior citizens. Though the event is organized by a temple, people of all castes, communities and religions are welcome to participate in the true spirit of brotherhood, communal harmony and national integration.


Shastavu Sri Bhootanatheshwara Temple is a 1500 year old shrine and the deity represented by three lingams is a unique feature of the temple. Sri Brahmakalashotsava celebrations of the renovated temple took place in a grand manner on May 19th 2010 and thousands of devotees converged to receive blessings of the deity.


Subsequently, the temple authorities under the leadership of Vijaynath Vittal Shetty decided to organize the village games contest in order to boost the rural community life. An organizing committee was formed with volunteers drawn from the Bhoothanatheshwara Bhajana Mandali to oversee the event and wide publicity was given to attract maximum participation in this sports meet.


Some highlights:
Games: Tug of War (Hagga Jaggata), Mud Field Running Race (Kesarugadde Ota), Treasure Hunt in Mud Field, Coconut Basket Race, Dehusking Coconut With Teeth, Frog Jumping (Gunny Bag Race), and Cycle Racing (30 kms) are some of the interesting games being conducted. Other talents being tested are Beedi Rolling, Weaving Coconut Leaf design, Rice Packing (Mudi), Rangoli, Drawing, Fancy Dress and Natural Body Building (unlike professional body building) too will be judged. As a tribute to the agricultural tradition of this region, best decorated cow and best looking Kori contest too will take place.


Prize Money: Attractive prize money like Rs. 25000 for Cycle Race, Rs. 20000 for Tug Of War (Group) and Rs. 5000 for best decorated cow and Rs. 3000 for best looking Kori etc, will be given. A special attraction is ‘Manassuda Ullasogu Bodad Anchinala Malpuva’, which is a talent show, where any individual or group having a special talent in any field should come and perform in front of the judges, similar to the Sony TV programme ‘Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’. The prize for this event is Rs. 20,000. Well known TV anchor Anushree will be one of the judges for the talent show.


Registrations: The organizers have received applications from all corners of Tulunadu, from places such as Kundapur, Udupi, Hebri, Bengare, Kasargod, Moodabidri, Karkala, Mudipu, Mangalore and Kasargod. Total of 1345 people have registered to take part in the various games including 56 teams for Tug-of-War, 144 cyclists for the cycle race, 191 contestants for Mud Field Race and 147 aspirants for the Treasure Hunt in Mud Field. Food and refreshments are being provided at the venue.


Expenditure: The organizing committee is incurring an expenditure of nearly Rs. 25 lakhs on hosting this event including Rs. 3 lakhs in prize money and Rs. 1.5 lakh on food. The prize money will be disbursed during the temple festival on March 5th.


Dress Code:
In order to highlight the traditional rural community life, dress code is compulsory for all players: Male players are have to compulsorily wear white mundu and female players must wear saree / churidar while playing the games. 


Kite Show:

As a special attraction Team Mangalore, the internationally famous kite flyers hobby group headed by Sarvesh Rao will put up a kite show and display their beautiful and creatively designed kites. Their will also educate the crowd regarding kite flying through demos and interaction and promote the hobby of kite flying to the rural masses.


Dance Performance by Padmashri Shobhana
The organizers have invited the famous Bharatanatyam artiste Shobhana to present a classical dance performance during the Kreedotsava. Shobhana is the niece of the legendary classical dancers the Travancore sisters and is a disciple of the renowned dancer Chitra Visweswaran. She has won the National Award for best actress of the year 1994 and Padmashri from the President of India in 2007. Her performance scheduled for Sunday 13th February 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.


March-April-May Programmes

Sri Bhootanatheshwara Kreedotsava will coincide with the annual Bhajana Mangalotsava of the temple which will take place from 3rd to 10th March, during which various religious ceremonies, vaidic rituals and poojas will be offered to the temple deity.  Cultural programmes will take place every evening during this period, including mega entertainment show involving reputed artistes and celebrities. The famous film music director Guru Kiran will present a stage show on March 5th. The schedules of other artistes will be announced later.


On the morning of 5th March 185 students who have excelled in sports and moved on to state and national level will be felicitated with cash awards worth Rs. 1.85 lakh at the temple premises.


This will be followed by State Level Kabbadi tournament in the month of April with prize money of Rs. 1 lakh and Village Cricket Tournament in May with prize money of Rs. 3 lakh, for which elaborate plans are being made.
