Six assaulted over land dispute in Puttur

Mangaluru, Sep 21 2017: A gang of people reportedly assaulted 6 people including a couple of Malekudiya community, is said to have happened in Puttur.


assaultedNagappa Malekudiya (52), his wife Dejamma (50), daily wage workers Appaiah (30), Harish (21), Jayarama M (41) and Devdas (35) were assaulted and they are under treatment at government hospital, Puttur.

Some 12 people with their faces covered barged into the house of Nagappa of Bilinele village, Kaikamba on Sunday night and forcibly took six persons to the house of Pramila, who works with police. They were allegedly attacked with wooden logs and sharp-edged weapons. Incidentally, Pramila too, belongs to Malekudiya community.

Complaint :  According to the complaint lodged by the victims at Kadaba police station, Pramila and her husband kept them in unlawful confinement, snatched their mobile phones and took their signatures on a blank paper. The couple complained that they were assaulted in the presence of Pramila.

Nagappa has said that they were released on Monday morning. However, before setting them free, their clothes were torn and they were made to wear some other clothes, Nagappa said. The accused also set the couple’s temporary house ablaze.

‘Land grab attempt’ : Nagappa and Dejamma said that of the four acre land that they owned, they had handed over two acres to Pramila who happens to be their relative.

Nagappa said that he and his wife have had been clearing the weeds in the rest of the land for the past one month by hiring daily wage labourers. “Pramila and Prakash have let hooligans threaten us to grab the remaining part of the land from us,” they said.

The other four members were taken by the miscreants in a jeep and were let out at Subrahmanya bus stop after issuing a warning to them not to come towards Puttur.
