Mangalore, March 11: The ministry for road transport and highways has cancelled the proposal to concretize the Shiradi Ghat stretch of NH 48, a project worth Rs. 118 crore, shortly after the visit of Jithin Prasad, the union minister of state for road transport and highways. The PWD office has received an official communication to this effect two days ago.

The ministry has directed the Karnataka PWD not to concretize the road and that the NHAI will include the stretch in its Hassan – BC Road four-lane project. The PWD has been directed to maintain the road till the NHAI starts the work. Right now, the traffic can move thanks to repairs worth Rs. 5 crore done by the PWD, but the monsoons will bring with them a slew of problems.

While admitting that the communication did not directly state that the Rs. 118 crore project has been cancelled, a PWD source said that no other meaning can be derived from the communication if the Shiradi Ghat stretch was to be included in NHAI’s four-lane project.

However, the ministry has not yet approved the five-part document regarding the four-lane project from Hassan to BC Road along NH48, a project worth Rs. 2,038 crore. This project is to reduce by 6km the distance between Hassan and BC Road. It will include a bypass each at Sakleshpur and Ballupete in Hassan. The four-lane will be constructed as per the design, build, finance, and operate (DBFO) model.
