Mangalore, May 23: District and Session court judge H R Deshpande inaugurated the first ever family court in the court premises on Monday, May 23.

Speaking on this occasion Mr. H R Deshpande said that the lawyers and the judicial officers should work in tandem to render service to the litigants effectively. People now look to the judiciary for redressal of their grievances. The huge backlog of cases was a major problem besides inordinate delay in deliverance of justice. He said 24 employees have been appointed for this court, and the family disputes pending in civil courts will get transferred to this new court. The need for setting up of more and more family courts has become imperative. Disputes within families need to be addressed faster, to make them more effective.

At present, in most of the district headquarters, these cases languish in district courts, which are burdened with large number of cases. As a result these cases do not get priority in hearing and early settlement, he added.

Family court Judge Padmaraj Desai said that the main purpose of establishment of this court is speed delivery of justice. The family court will play a great role of mediator to curb divorce cases as well as applications. If family-related issues drag for long in courts, they affect the future of the parties concerned, he said.

Padmaraj Desai, family court Judge, advocate P P Hegde and Mangalore Bar Association president SP Chengappa were present on the occasion.
