Security stepped up for upcoming Panchayat polls : ADGP Alok Mohan

Mangaluru Feb 17, 2016: Security will be tightened in the district for the forthcoming Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat  elections in order to prevent any untoward incident during the elections, said ADGP Alok Mohan.

Speaking to the Press at the City Police Commissioner’s Office on February 17, Wednesday,  he said that over 2500 police personnel, 2000 Home Guards and special commandos have been deployed for security during the election. There are a total 824 polling booths in Dakshina Kannada District out of which 103 are hyper sensitive, 289 sensitive and 371 normal booths, he informed.

He also said that  there are 154 booths in Naxal affected areas and that extra precautions have been taken by deploying armed forces in the region. Kerala Police and Madikeri Police are coordinating to prevent anti-social elements by lining up check posts in borders, he said. Stringent action will be taken against anyone trying to disrupt peace during the elections, the IGP warned.

He said over 3000 people from the coastal belt have been detained in the past two years  for unlawful activities. Of the 16 arrested in the past three months,  Goonda Act has been invoked against three, he added.

 IGP Amrit Pal, Police Commissioner Chandra Shekar, Dakshina Kannada SP Sharanappa, Udupi SP Annamalai and others were present.
