Mangalore, May 30, 2012 : Although schools in DK re-opened on May 30, Wednesday, school managements are still confused about the Right to Education (RTE) Act, which provides 25 percent reservation in private schools for children belonging to underprivileged sections of society.

Several schools had already completed and closed their admission procedures when Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, state education minister, announced that the RTE must be implemented from the present academic year.

Several schools are finding it difficult to fill the 25 percent reserved seats, and some of them have already placed students already admitted into this quota.

According to the statistics released by the Public Instructions Department, there are 1,464 reserved seats for the poor in DK, of which 311 are available in Bantwal, 78 in Belthangady, 455 in Mangalore rural, 306 in Mangalore, 107 in Moodubidri, and 207 in Puttur.

These seats are reserved for children belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories, children belonging to 1, 2A, 2B, 3A, and 3B categories, children of migrant labourers, children with special needs, street children, HIV positive children, and children belonging to economically backward families.
