Sand Act has hindered sand-related work - Mayur Ullal

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, April 5, 2011: Joint Action Committee President Mayur Ullal said at a press meet held at Press Club on April 5, Tuesday that the implementation of the Karnataka Sand Act of April 1, 2011 has created a lot of confusion among DK sand contractors and has hindered the progress of work throughout the district. He also accused the district administration and the state government of being directly responsible for this confusion.

The state government had implemented this act because certain contractors were illegally selling sand at high prices. Mr. Ullal said that the Joint Action Committee has stopped all sand-related work from the past 5 days because it wanted to function as per the law. Although the committee had requested the district administration and the state government to solve the issue, it has not yet received a response, he added.

He also said that the Joint Action Committee met CM B. S. Yeddyurappa and discussed the matter with him. The CM had assured them that the new rule is not meant for the coastal regions and that concessions will be provided. Mr. Ullal said that this move will be greatly appreciated by the committee.

He also said that committee is only waiting for the government’s nod to resume all sand-related work.

Melwin Lesly, the treasurer, and B. S. Chandru, the advisor, were also present.
