Samithi protests construction of over bridge with soil filling

Karavali Bypass Nagarika Samithi coordinator Bannanje Babu Ameen said that construction of overbridge by filling soil will destroy the looks of the area and the main connectivity that adjoins the crucial junctions in the temple town Udupi. The connectivity to the business establishments, hospitals and also the educational institutions, will be cut off. The connectivity to Malpe will also be hit, as the road leading to the port will be obstructed by the over bridge," he complained and threatened an intense protest.

He suggested that the over bridge can be built with the support of cement pillars. As it will facilitate the movement of vehicles and also pedestrians. Protests will happen in the days to come to save the beauty of the Karavali junction and the adjacent areas he cautioned. Consumer Forum Member Shanthraj Aithal termed the design unscientific. The deficiency survey held in 1972 had predicted the sensitivity of the area. The fly over and over bridges built are all a failure as they do not have the utility.

Shiroor mutt seer Sri Laxmivaratheertha Swami said the national highway officials should take a decision after consulting local people and taking them into confidence.  Industrialist and Chamber of Commerce former chairman Prasad Raj Kanchan said that the highway plan is an utter failure.

The unscientific planning has led to problems. "Over 2,500 families have lost their land. Vehicle density increases by 30 per cent every year and the design to build or widen the roads should be foreseen accordingly and planned.
