March 15: Multi-level safety measures have been put in place at the state-run Kaiga atomic power station in the coastal Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, a senior official said.

"We have put in place multi-level safety and evacuation plans to meet any eventuality at the plant where four atomic units generate about 880 MW of power," Kaiga station project director J.P. Gupta told reporters.

Asserting that Kaiga, situated on the west coast near Karwar off the Arabian Sea about 500 km from Bangalore, does not fall in the earthquake zone, Gupta said that advanced technology with sensors was being used to prevent any radiation leak in case of an emergency.

"The plant shuts down automatically if any radiation leak is detected. The earthquake gauging centre at the plant can warn us of any seismic activity in the vicinity," Gupta said in the wake of a massive earthquake and tsunami causing explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on the east coast of Japan Saturday.

The Kaiga atomic plant has been in operation since 2000 under the aegis of the state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. Its four units use pressurised heavy water reactors to generate 220 MW each.
