Sadanand Suvarna to receive Atmashakti Award

Mangalore, April 3, 2011: Sadanand Suvarna, the national award-winning filmmaker and theatre artiste, has been nominated for the annual Atmashakti Award, given away by the Brahma Shri Narayana Guru Swami Prakashan and Charitable Trust.

In 1977, Suvarna’s “Ghatashraddha,” directed by Girish Kasaravalli, won the prestigious Swarna Kamal award. His film “Kubi Mattu Iyala” won the state government’s Best Film Award. The lead actor of this movie Charu Haasan won the central government’s Best Actor Award for his role.

The Mulki-born Suvarna lives in Mumbai and writes Kannada plays. He also translates plays from other languages into Kannada. Some of his plays are “Kurudu Kanchana,” “Guddeda Bhoota,” and “Gondulu.” He got an acting diploma from the Natak Academy of Maharashtra and a certificate in photography. He most popular plays are “Dharmachakra,” “Suli,” “Donkubalada Nayakaru,” “Court Martial,” and “Urulu.”

The TV serial “Guddeda Bhoota,” made Suvarna a household name. His documentary titled “Hucchu Manassina Hattu Mukhagalu” was widely appreciated and received many awards. His Suvarnagiri Publications have encouraged many young writers by publishing their first works.

The Atmashakti Awards will be conferred on eight more people—Somappa Suvarna (community service), Pushpalatha Shetty (education), Dr. N. V. Poojary (medical service), Purushottam Poojary (legal service), Narayana Suvarna (media), H. Sudarshan (sports and athletics), Muddu Moodubelle (art and literature), and Ganesh Bangera (business enterprise).

The awards will be conferred on the achievers at a glittering awards ceremony, which is scheduled to be held on April 16 at 4:30 p.m.
