Mangalore, November 12: The DK rural police are toying with the idea of launching youth clubs in colleges to encourage them to assist the police in fighting crime, said Superintendent of Police A. S. Rao during his presidential address at the inauguration of the “Save Youth from Mishap” organized by the Mangalore Institute of Fire and Safety.

Recalling the communal riots of the recent past, he said that youth clubs were formed to help the youths understand the situation. Since the youth clubs have not been a great success, the SP said that plans were afoot to launch these clubs in colleges too.

Observing the total lack of interaction between the police department and the youth, Dr. Rao said that involving youth in police activities will help the police understand the youth and vice versa. Speaking on the importance of educating the youth on safety issues, he said that the US is powerful now because it was a nation of young people at the start of the century. India is in a similar condition now and the power of the youth must be harnessed, he said.

Pointing out the unfortunate fact that nearly 60 percent of those involved in accidents are young people, he said that the campaign should be targeted toward the youth.

T. C. Shivashankar Murthy, the vice chancellor of Mangalore University, inaugurated the campaign, and said that this campaign is very important because about 65 percent of India’s population is below 35 and 50 percent is below 25. He also urged the youth, especially college students and young professionals, to teach others about safety.

H. S. Varadarajan, the chief fire officer, said that it is better to lose one’s hair by wearing a helmet than to lose one’s life without wearing one. He said that he has observed students place helmets on their heads only when they see a policeman and urged the youth to wear helmets to save their lives, instead of wearing them because of the rules. He also urged parents to ensure that their children will wear helmets while gifting them two-wheelers.
