Mangalore, Oct 26, 2011: The Sisters of Charity of St. Capitanio and Gerosa (SCCG) celebrated their platinum jubilee at Belvedere in Angelore recently.

The SCCG was founded on Nov 21, 1832 at Lovere in Italy by Bartolomea Capitanio, whose first companion was Caterina Gerosa. Bartolomea died 8 months after the institute was founded on July 26, 1883. Caterina, who later took the name of Sr. Vincenza Gerosa, continued the good work and died on June 29, 1847 after handing it over to several other sisters. The two were canonized by Pope Pius XII on May 18, 1950. The institute was erected as a religious congregation by the Papal Brief of Pope Gregory XVI on June 5, 1840.

The SCGG has 10 provinces in Asia and 5 in Italy. It has a total of 193 sisters in America who work in Brazil, Argentina, Peru, and Uruguay. Around 70 sisters work in Zambia – Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and Egypt.

The SCGG was established in Mangalore in 1898 by Sr. Alesandrina Sormani, Sr. Maddalena Merghetti, Sr. Fiorenza Ronzoni, and Sr. Franceschina Luraschi.
