Ruckus at MCC monthly meeting

Mangalore, July 30, 2011: Mangalore, Jul 30: The monthly meeting of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), held on July 29 Friday, came to an end after just one hour of heated argument caused by the Opposition raising their voice over Mayor Praveen Anchan’s move to approve 60 developmental projects funded by the State Finance Commission (SFC).

The first 45 minutes of the meeting comprised heated arguments regarding the release of SFC funds and the next 15 minutes were spent in useless discussion. Needless to say, no issue related to the welfare of the common man was discussed.

The Opposition accused the BJP of discriminating against them while allocating SFC funds, arguing that the funds have not been distributed equally among the 60 wards. The BJP-represented wards have received more funds, they alleged. Two independent councilors supported them and demanded to know how the mayor could approve a project worth Rs. 11.93 crore without first discussing the issue with the council. In response, Mayor Praveen said that the funds were not allocated to wards, but to incomplete projects.

The meeting came to an abrupt end when Sudhir Shetty Kannur read out the decisions taken and K. Ashraf, the former mayor, tore up the agenda.

In the ensuing ruckus, the members totally forgot to express their appreciation for MCC Commissioner K. N. Vijayaprakash, who will be shortly leaving his post as MCC commission to take over as the CEO of the DK Zilla Panchayat.
