Bantwal, Mar 27: Union Minister for Law and Justice M. Veerappa Moily on March 26 Saturday turned on the switch lighting the three electric bulbs in the house of Sunanda of Kavalpaduru in Bantwal for the first time. Sunanda’s is one of the 110 houses in Kavalpaduru GP, which have received electricity connection thanks to the efforts of Rotary Club Bantwal, which undertook a drive to provide electricity to the village under its “Rotary Sampoorna Vidyuth Yojana.”

The minister turned on the power supply, lighting up around 40 houses and symbolically launching the drive. The other houses will receive electricity connection by the end of April because the electric poles have not yet been raised, said Prabhakar Amin, a GP member. He said that the wiring has been completed for all the houses.

Rotary Club has provided solar lights for 9 houses since these houses have thatched roofs unfit for electrification.

In his address, Moily said that the allegation that the centre is not helping the state to reduce power rates is baseless and added that the state should be willing to implement schemes. Stating that wind energy can also be used to generate electricity, he said that the import policy on coal is quite liberal. Regarding poor housing in villages, he said that this is because the Indira Awaz Yojana is not being implemented properly. Regarding the ban imposed on gutka packets, he said that the arecanut industry must think of an environment friendly alternative.
