Mangaluru, May 06, 2019: The 45th annual community weddings was hosted at Rosario Cathedral on May 5, Sunday and it was the lucky 13 couples that exchanged vows, rings and mangalsutras in a simple, solemn religious and social ceremony in the presence of Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangaluru. Bishop celebrated the Eucharistic mass. St Vincent De Paul Society of cathedral has been holding these weddings with passion to help the poor and a mission to make the weddings simple and meaningful. Reception held soon after nuptials on the Rosario College grounds. NRI entrepreneur Ivan Fernandes was the chief guest. Fr J B Crasta, C J Simon, Mary Pinto and other members of St Vincent De Paul Society and others were present on the occasion.
Matrimony is a lifetime once happening generally, many struggle to repay loans to meet the expenses. Many girls are forced to be spinsters because they cannot afford to get married. Mass marriages, that are taking place in the society since many years are a boon to such unfortunate girls and boys, who are marginalised.
The Catholics of Mangaluru are large hearted and socially conscious, community weddings for the past 44 years make it clear the community cares for less-fortunate. The Vincent De Paul Society of Rosario Cathedral decided to hold its golden jubilee celebrations in the year 1976. As a part of the celebration, the society decided to take up an exemplary scheme that would benefit many. Due to the serious thinking in this direction by the then parish priest of Rosario Cathedral Fr Fred V Pereira and assistant parish priest Fr Denis Castelino, the scheme of community weddings took birth.
In the last 45 years hundreds of couples benefitted and many families have grown and are stable supporting the community. Other communities too have followed this system and it is hoped that there will be a better understanding to make weddings affordable and curtail the unnecessary waste and recklessness. The wedding should be a stepping stone to security and progress of families and people.
