Matrimony is a lifetime once happening generally,  many struggle to repay loans to meet the expenses.  Many girls are forced to be spinsters  because they cannot afford to get married.  Mass marriages, that are taking place in the society since many years are a boon to such unfortunate girls and boys, who are marginalised.

The Catholics of Mangaluru are large hearted and socially conscious, community weddings for the past 44 years make it clear the community cares for less-fortunate.  The Vincent De Paul Society of Rosario Cathedral decided to hold its golden jubilee celebrations in the year 1976. As a part of the celebration, the society decided to take up an exemplary scheme that would benefit many. Due to the serious thinking in this direction by the then parish priest of Rosario Cathedral Fr Fred V Pereira and assistant parish priest Fr Denis Castelino, the scheme of community weddings took birth.

In the last 45 years hundreds of couples benefitted and many families have grown and are stable supporting the community.  Other communities too have followed this system and it is hoped that there will be a better understanding to make weddings affordable and curtail the unnecessary waste and recklessness. The wedding should be a stepping stone to security and progress of families and people.
